Linguistics is the scientific study of language and includes a variety of disciplines that examine, among other things, the structure and types of languages, their use in social contexts with diverse communicative goals, language acquisition, learning and teaching, biological and cognitive aspects, etc.

In addition to their employment in the field of education, graduates of the Department can specialise scientifically and work in areas such as lexicography, information technology, law, advertising, translation, editing, etc.

Linguistics as an independent subject was first taught in Greece at the Department of Philology of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens by the founder of modern Greek linguistics, Georgios Hatzidakis. Prominent linguists ahve also taught at the Department of Linguistics, such as Professor Georgios Babiniotis (Rector of the University, 2000-2006) and Professor Dimitra Theofanopoulou-Kontou.
